British Columbia Water Adventures

The province’s long coastline makes for the expeditious kayaker’s dream: there are thousands of uninhabited marine islands along the coast just waiting to be discovered by a bold adventurer with a paddle and a healthy helping of curiosity. Sea kayaking in the gorgeous, deep mountain fjords is not to be missed, if only to be able to say the word “fjord” over and over again when recounting how you managed the often-tricky waters. Whitewater rafting and canoeing are also extremely popular, given the vast number of rivers and routes just waiting for you to strike out into the blue.

Of course, for some, it isn’t about the waters themselves. It’s about what’s hiding in them. Which is why British Columbia’s fishing is second to none.

Chinook and Salmon
Fishermen know about British Columbia’s Chinook salmon, the crown jewel of sport fishing. Chinook salmon can weigh as much as 70lbs – well worth the bragging rights back home. Giant white sturgeon are also slipping around for fishermen who want to wrestle an even bigger challenge; at 1000lbs, these aren’t fish for the amateur angler. The steelhead salmon is smaller, but more elusive and a hard-fighting game fish ready to box your line. For those just looking for something tasty to fry up for supper, go for the rainbow and cutthroat trout, char, whitefish, pike and bass that abound in the region’s many gorgeous lakes.
