Northwest Territories Snow Adventures

Snow and ice make brand-new sports up in the Northwest Territories, like driving the ice roads, which is a ton of fun. Drive over ice up to a meter thick ice with a car, truck, or our personal favorite – dog team.

Speaking of which, the Canadian Championship Dog Derby is held in the Northwest Territories, and it's a don't-miss event: a 150-mile race bringing mushers from all over North America. It’s one of the most trying endurance races in the history of dog sledding – or any other sport, for that matter. Step on out and cheer them on or learn how to handle your own team in a slightly less life-threatening learning trail.

Cross Country Skiing
They don’t skimp on the more traditional winter sports in the Northwest Territories either. Canada’s very first cross-country skiing team trained on the trails in good ol' NT, and famous cross-country skiers from around the world still come here to train. It’s unlikely you’ll be rubbing shoulders with them, since the trails are often a wonderful way to experience isolated wilderness beauty, but you’ll be proud to know you’re up the same challenges as world competitors. Go out and conquer uncharted territory in a snowmobile jaunt or join the natives in a national pastime and a traveling staple: snowshoeing. Strap on a pair and get out on the snow to enjoy the wild and tromp around without sinking deep. If you think you’re up for it, join into one of the hundreds of friendly community races or gear up for the big one: the Rock and Ice Ultra in Yellowknife.
