The pastoral beauty of PEI has given it the nickname “Garden of the Gulf”, and all of that lovely scenery makes it perfect for long, rambling walks across the countryside, easygoing bike rides, and a relaxing game of golf.
Wherever you go on the island, you’ll encounter the region’s famous red soil, which gives the land a color and brilliance seen nowhere else in Canada. Trek up and down the rolling hills and woods and into picturesque towns and villages, where hospitality is unbeatable and the art and antiques are not to be missed. If you’d like to get out of civilization for awhile for a tranquil spot of peace, head over to the sand dunes of Greenwich. The only company you’ll have there are the rare birds, plants, and delicate pieces of history left buried in the sand. Browse for a historic relic as you take in the amazing view.
Tranquility
Bicycling is one of Prince Edward Island’s favorite pastimes, with sixteen dedicated heritage roads to explore the land as it used to be. You’ll feel as though you’ve traveled back in time to the days where the island’s most famous fictional heroine, Anne of Green Gables, used to dance in meadows and kiss white birches for sheer love of the place. You’ll understand why so many have been able to find their own love in her rapture for the red roads and the lovely farmland. In keeping with the tone of tranquility but hardly in keeping with the old-time feel of the island, you may be surprised to find that PEI is Canada’s number-one golf destination, with beautifully laid out courses only a whistle away from undiscovered beaches and delightful little wooded copses. Tee off in the midst of splendor and watch the ball sail away into the blue.
