For traveling on land the old-fashioned way, there’s nothing quite like equestrianism. Throw yourself into the saddle and step out for a long trot on some of Quebec’s most beautiful backcountry trails. Much of Quebec is hidden from the casual eye as you drive along in a car, but on a horse you’ll be able to find the lovely towns and charming villages tucked out of sight behind bends in the Outaouais region and the stunning Charlevoix. Head up to the Appalachian Mountains where the world is still pristine and untouched, and marvel at the beauty kept hidden from man’s hand.

Three-quarters of Quebec is still natural wild land, a fantastic feat considering the huge size of the province and the stunning splendor of its mountains and woods. There are over 35 natural parks and wildlife reserves in Quebec, all of them bursting with animals, plants, and birds that help you feel as though you’ve returned to the wilderness again.

Cyclists love traversing Quebec’s southern region, where they can cruise through miles of farmland along the St. Lawrence River or get into more challenging routes around the Gaspé Peninsula. La Route Verte offers 4,000 kilometers of long-distance bike paths, many of them formed from abandoned railroads that used to crisscross the region. If you’re up for traveling in a pack, jump into the Montreal Tour de l’Ile, one of the region’s most famous bicycling tours, and trade the easygoing camaraderie with native French-Canadians. There’ll be a lot of good-natured French banter on the uphill slopes, but don’t worry if you can’t understand it: it’s said that even citizens of France need a translation book for the peculiarities of Quebec's particular French dialect and slang.

If you’d rather get up a mountain without traveling a trail, get into Quebec’s rock climbing scene. The rock at Val David in the Laurentians is a serious trial for even the most skilled climbers, and the big wall at Cap Trinité offers you plenty to sink your fingertips into.
