Yukon Territory Land Adventures

The Yukon offers plenty of symbolism in its wild expanse. Nearly every off-road trail in the region was first used by Klondike gold prospectors, silver miners, First Nation peoples, or the bountiful wildlife of the region. Bicycle enthusiasts and hikers alike can trek trails that range from extreme challenge to casual meander, all of it through astonishing wildness that comes up to the trail’s edge – and very often right onto it.

If you’re the competitive sort, come for the legendary 24 Hours of Light on the boreal trails at Whitehorse. The sun never sets and the sky is constantly lit with the mystic beauty of the Northern Lights; it’s an unforgettable journey that feels otherworldly and perfect in the world, as though you’d never seen how beautiful the world was before. In June, cyclists ride the Haines Highway from Haines Junction to Haines, Alaska, and riders that are more casual, cruise under the heavy scent of sage in the hills around Whitehorse.

If hunting’s more your outdoor flavor, there are legal hunting seasons for moose, caribou, mountain sheep and goats, and wood bison, as well as the more blood-thrilling chase for wolves, grizzlies, black bears, and wolverines. If you’d rather simply watch the wildlife from afar and shoot with a camera, there are wonderful chances to view breathtaking native species at every turn, from the trumpeter swans and sandhill cranes to elk, mule deer, polar bears, musk oxen and cougars.
